Did he say Christmas? Well yes, he did. FBC has a long tradition of taking a special offering at the end of summer to be divided among the missionaries that the church supports. The long head start makes sure that the gifts will make it across the world in time for the real event!

PrimeTimer’s Stanford Tour

PrimeTimers are heading up to Stanford for another exciting tour. On Thursday, September 18, our cars will leave church at 9:30 AM, pick up at Spring Lakes at 9:45 and plan on arriving at the famous Stanford Memorial Church by 11 o’clock. Then we’ll participate in a docent-led tour of the Cantor Arts Center followed by an walk through the sculptures of Auguste Rodin. After that we’ll lunch at Arby’s, El Camino Real and S Bernardo, Sunnyvale, around 1:30 (ordering off their menu) and start home by 2:30. Due to restricted parking, we will travel in personal automobiles. Sign up for the driver of your choice (suggested donation of $4 per person for gas). See Dick Mack for details.

AWANA begins on September 9th. This is a great opportunity for us all to serve. AWANA is for our children ages 3 years old to 6th grade (Cubbies: 3 & 4 year olds; Sparks: K-2nd grade; T&T Boys and T&T Girls: 3rd - 6th grades). Throughout the evening the kids have Game Time, Handbook Time and Teaching Time. During the Handbook Time the kids are reciting the Bible verses they have memorized during the week. If a child goes through the entire AWANA program completing all their books they have memorized about 500+ verses. In order to encourage them in this amazing program, we need YOU! We need ladies (and men!) who can come and listen to these children recite their verses each Tuesday night. AWANA is from 6:30 - 8 PM. If you would like more information about how you can serve, please contact Linda Kay, AWANA Commander or myself. We’d love to give you more information.

Beginning September 14th during the Sunday School hour we will be offering a ladies class with Janis Brackett. Janis has written a 10 week study called “IN GOD’S IMAGE” God Elects a People of His Own, based on Genesis. Janis is an awesome Bible study teacher, you will not want to miss this opportunity to grow under her leadership. The materials are free and will be passed out on September 14th. If you have any questions, please contact me. I will encourage each of us to begin reading Genesis 1 - 11 to get a headstart on the study.

Because life is so busy, I am not offering a mid-week study time. I know life can just get so crazy during the week, that adding one more activity can be just too much. So we will see how this goes and re-evaluate after the first of the year.

WOMEN’S RETREAT is March 20 - 22, 2009 at ECCO Conference Center in Oakhurst, CA. Brochures will be coming your way very soon. We are working on finalizing some of the details, so watch your mailboxes. I know money is tight, so if you would like to begin putting some monies towards retreat, please feel free to give that to me and I will begin an account for you. Retreat is such a great time for us as FBC women to get away and strengthen our relationship with God and with one another. Please considering attending if you never have before. We have a great time, you won’t be disappointed!!

GIFTED!

“IT’S MORE BLESSED TO GIVE, than to receive.” As a kid I had a problem with that old adage. I thought the blessing of receiving far outweighed the blessing of giving. Even when you brought a gift to a friend’s birthday there was the hope, dare I say expectation, that you would receive a “goody bag” and lots of cake, and maybe a prize or two if you won the infamous pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey game. When you gave it was always with the anticipation of getting something in return.
Isn’t it good that things change with age? Or do they?
Even as adults our giving is often shadowed with the hope of receiving. We help another person with a task, with the hope that some day they will help us. We lend a tool or our car, with hopes that it will come back in better shape than when we lent it out. We may even tithe knowing that we shall receive the blessed tax-deduction at the end of the year.
But, for those blessed by God, our response should be something a quite different.
God tells us that we are gifted to be a gift, and this all started with the One who is the Gift. (John 3:16-17) We are reminded in His Word that we love because He first loved us. (1 John 4:19) Our ability to love, and thus to give, comes from the One who gave all for us. (Philippians 2:6-8) As God told Abraham, we were blessed to be a blessing. (Genesis 12:1-3)
So, there’s the grand secret to discovering the blessedness that comes from giving; you, in Christ, are the gift. In living, and giving, as our Lord did, we find the true blessing. The best gift we have to give today does not come wrapped in a box, or written upon a check, but expressed in the full giving of ourselves.
You ARE gifted . . . so, give!
